The grain, the whole grain and nothing but the grain
Whole grain cereals, such as Spelt have been eaten since Biblical times. We at Spoff insist on using wholegrain oats and oatmeals for our Highland cereals and organic wholegrain brown rice flakes for our gluten free products. They taste better and are better for you.
Processing removes the parts of the grain which offer the most goodness. All grains start off as “whole grains” which consists of the starchy endosperm, the fibre-rich bran and the germ giving the complete package.
Wholegrains are a natural ‘superfood’ :
They’re low in fat
They provide a wide range of vitamins and minerals
They’re full soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre helps lower bad cholesterol and insoluble fibre promote digestive health.
They have a low glycaemic load providing slow release energy and reducing the urge to snack helping to keep blood sugar levels stable - a good choice for us all, especially for people with diabetes
They contain protective antioxidants in similar amounts to some fruits and vegetables. So all in all “super” whole grains may help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, boost the immune system and help with weight management all at the same time.
